Plans for Djupavik With this project I will focus on the theme of resource scarcity. This concept threads through the Inbox/Outpost project on many levels. Most basically there is the challenge of traveling to the remote location of Djupavik from the U.S., knowing there are few resources to work with as an artist on location. The site itself, an abandoned Herring factory, is an example of the impact of resource scarcity. It closed when the fish disappeared from the surrounding waters. Finally Iceland's beautiful but barren landscape, which is void of diverse vegetation due to it's volcanic soils, extreme environment and the impact of humans, who were unaware of this fragile structure. This history and site are pertinent examples of the effects of exploiting resources. I will focus on capturing and most importantly communicating this theme for it is an issue we face globally, I plan to do this through creating photo compositions and then collecting a physical catalogue of the elements used, that will later accompany the digital components at the outpost.
