The Djúpavik herring factory, figurehead of Iceland’s most dynamic industry, once made the European fishery sector green with envy. Today the redundant concrete property, wounded in its pride, grimly braves the bleak Icelandic elements. Factory workers and fishermen turned their backs on the place a long time ago and since then the Arctic Ocean, its water fished out in the 1950s, has taken it into possession. At the end of April 2009 a group of six international visual artists travelled to this northernmost part of Iceland. In solitude and in extreme conditions they worked there and conducted an artistic survey of the typical historic, geographic and ecological conditions in Djúpavik. Their survey resulted in a number of installations, actions on location and a newspaper, which you can see and download here. During their survey the artists reported their findings to a documentation centre in SIGN, Groningen (NL), on a day-to-day basis through a variety of media using all possible means of communication. In Groningen (NL) documentalist, filing and liaison artist Daniëlle van Zuijlen mapped the unpredictable flow of data. She questioned, complemented and responded to the artists at work and put the information together. She made it grow into an ongoing presentation at SIGN’s, mercilessly revealing not only the false tracks, side-paths and artistic frictions, but also the lines and liaisons brought about by cooperation, by chance and through association. Exhibition in Djúpavik, Iceland: June 7 till July 15 Open every day: 13.00-18.00 and on request This project is initiated by Sidsel Genee and Aafke Weller and organized and developed in collaboration with Hótel Djupavik, Iceland and SIGN, Groningen, Netherlands
